Ben Haile | Civil Rights Project | Senior Counsel

Ben began litigating civil rights cases in 2004. He now focuses almost entirely on legal claims around denial of essential medical care in jails and prisons, refusal to prevent gang attacks on people in prison, and claims of police misconduct involving excessive force or suppression of free speech and peaceful assembly rights. He has litigated cases in Oregon state and federal trial courts, the Oregon Court of Appeals, and the Fifth and Ninth Circuit U.S. courts of appeals.

From 2011 to 2016, Ben was a member of the Portland Law Collective, representing labor unions, progressive political organizations, activists, and incarcerated people subjected to cruel and unusual punishment. Ben is an active member in the National Police Accountability Project, a network of attorneys specializing in litigation for victims of police misconduct, as well as the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association and the National Lawyers Guild.
